Hong Kong minibus driver arrested after pedestrian killed outside shopping centre

Man, 66, detained on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death over fatal accident outside Plaza Hollywood shopping centre

Hong Kong police have arrested a 66-year-old minibus driver after his vehicle hit and killed a pedestrian outside a shopping centre.

Police said the vehicle hit the female pedestrian, 47, as it turned off Lung Poon Road into a minibus terminal at the Plaza Hollywood shopping centre in Diamond Hill at around 10.55am on Wednesday.

The woman suffered multiple injuries and was taken unconscious to United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong, where she was pronounced dead just before 1pm.

A police spokesman said the minibus driver, who passed a breathalyser test, was detained on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death.

Police appealed to witnesses or anyone with information to contact officers on 3661 0264.

Separately, a police constable was injured in the abdomen when a Fire Services Department van hit his motorcycle on Lai Chi Kok Road in Mong Kok at around 9.29am.

The spokesman said the van was changing lanes when it rammed into the back of the motorcycle.

The injured officer was taken to Kwong Wah Hospital in Yau Ma Tei for treatment.

Officers from the Kowloon West traffic unit are following up on the case.

The number of people killed or seriously injured in traffic accidents across the city dropped by 39.4 per cent to 478 in the first seven months of this year from 790 in the same period in 2023, police figures show.
